Katmai Wilderness Lodge Bear Viewing in Alaska Wildlife Guides in Alaska

Katmai Wilderness Lodge is now undergoing an exciting period of renovations and upgrades, and is closed for 2025 and 2026, with plans to reopen for the 2027 season.

Katmai Wilderness Lodge stands on land that has been home to Native Alaskan Peoples for nearly 6,000 years. Our deep commitment to preserving this rich heritage has guided our decision to implement a complete systems rebuild—one that carefully protects the historical significance of the grounds surrounding us. While this extensive process will require a minimum of several (warm) months, we believe this thoughtful approach is essential to honor the land’s history.

Our renovation plans include installing an environmentally sustainable waste management system that will exceed the efficiency of our current infrastructure. We’re also enhancing the Lodge’s amenities while carefully preserving the rustic, welcoming atmosphere that has always made Katmai Wilderness Lodge special. These improvements will ensure we continue providing comfortable accommodations while better protecting our cherished environment.

We understand this news may disappoint those planning to visit during the 2025 and 2026 seasons. While we cannot accept bookings for these years, we will soon begin taking reservations for 2027, when we look forward to welcoming you to the enhanced Katmai Wilderness Lodge. Please stay connected with us as we share updates on our exciting transformation over the coming months.

How do I get to and from the lodge?
From Anchorage, simply travel to Kodiak, Alaska via Alaska Airlines. There, a trusted representative from our floatplane charter company will meet and accompany you to the plane base in Kodiak for your quick flight to Katmai Lodge. Learn more on our Getting There page.
How long is the floatplane flight from Kodiak to the lodge?
The floatplane ride from Kodiak to the lodge takes about 45 minutes.
Does weather ever delay flights to Katmai Wilderness Lodge?

Weather delays are a realistic consideration when traveling throughout Alaska, so we strongly recommend securing Travel Insurance for your Alaska vacation.

We highly advise spending a night in Kodiak before and after your lodge adventure to avoid tight scheduling difficulties or issues with travel delays to and from the lodge. If you plan to fly from Kodiak to Anchorage the same day as departing the lodge at the end of your stay, we recommend reserving a flight to Anchorage that leaves Kodiak at 4:45 p.m. or later flights.

What can I do while in Kodiak?

Kodiak is a beautiful, small town with a rich history influenced by Native Culture, Russian ERA, World War II, USCG (United States Coast Guard), and is home to a rich fishing industry and Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to friendly locals, the town boasts several wonderful museums, restaurants, and shops – all within convenient walking distance of downtown hotels.

Are there luggage restrictions?
We ask you to limit your total weight of baggage in and out of the lodge to less than 50 pounds per person. Soft-sided duffel-style bags are recommended, for easy packing inside Alaska’s classic “bush planes.”

Any additional planes or costs incurred by excess luggage weight are solely the guest’s responsibility. The floatplane carrier’s office offers convenient luggage storage for any additional baggage you won’t need while at Katmai, available for quick pick up upon your return to Kodiak.
