First, Fly to Anchorage, Alaska

Your adventure begins with a flight to Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city and main gateway to the state’s vast wilderness. Anchorage is served by nearly all major U.S. airlines with multiple daily flights from cities across the country and Canada, making connections straightforward. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is well-equipped with modern amenities, dining options, and rental car services.

Why Anchorage?

Anchorage is a vibrant urban hub nestled between mountains and the sea. Many travelers choose to spend time here before heading deeper into Alaska’s wilderness. You might consider staying an extra day to explore the city’s museums, parks, and cultural attractions or to acclimate before your journey to Kodiak.

Second, Fly from Anchorage to Kodiak Island

From Anchorage, your next flight takes you to Kodiak Island via Alaska Airlines. The flight is about 1.5 hours and offers breathtaking views of Alaska’s rugged coastline, glaciers, and island archipelagos.

About Kodiak Island

Kodiak is a place of rich native heritage, shaped by the Alutiiq people and Russian settlers. It holds significant historical importance, including WWII military sites and the world’s largest Coast Guard base. The island is also famous for the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, where brown bears, eagles, and other wildlife thrive. As the third-largest fishing port in the U.S., Kodiak supports a vibrant commercial fishing industry, contributing to the local economy and culture.

Exploring Kodiak

If your schedule allows, spend time exploring Kodiak’s small downtown area with its museums, art galleries, and seafood restaurants. You’ll find friendly locals eager to share stories and recommendations. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about the region’s unique history and traditions before heading to the remote lodge.

To minimize stress and avoid missing connections, we highly recommend arriving in Kodiak at least one day before your floatplane flight to Katmai Wilderness Lodge.

Connecting Flights

If you plan to fly from Kodiak to Anchorage the same day, we strongly advise booking flights that depart Kodiak no earlier than 4:45 p.m. This timing helps ensure you have enough buffer time for potential floatplane or weather delays, check-in, and security at Kodiak Airport.

Keep in mind that we can’t guarantee floatplanes will arrive in time for same-day connections. We strongly recommend buying travel insurance or spending a night in Kodiak before flying out.

Important Travel Tips & Recommendations
  • Arrive Early in Kodiak: Due to Alaska’s unpredictable weather, flights can be delayed or canceled because of fog, wind, or rain. Arriving at least one day early in Kodiak allows for any unexpected schedule changes and gives you time to explore this historic and beautiful town without pressure.
  • Travel Insurance: Given the remote location and variable weather, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. It protects your investment against cancellations, delays, or interruptions, giving you peace of mind.
  • Weather & Delays: Please be aware that weather conditions may affect all flight segments. Our staff monitors the weather closely and coordinates with air carriers to keep you informed, but flexibility and patience are essential when traveling in Alaska.
Baggage Guidelines
  • Weight Limit: Each guest is allowed a maximum of 50 pounds of luggage, including carry-ons and checked items. This limit is strictly enforced due to space and weight restrictions on floatplanes.
  • Preferred Luggage: Soft-sided duffel bags or soft luggage are highly recommended for easier handling and storage in the floatplane. Hard-sided suitcases are generally not accepted.
  • Excess Baggage: If your luggage exceeds the 50-pound limit, it may require a separate flight, which will incur additional costs payable by the guest.
  • Storage Options: If you’re traveling with extra baggage, Kodiak’s floatplane company offers secure luggage storage. You can safely leave unneeded items there and retrieve them upon your return from the lodge.
