About Katmai Wilderness Lodge
Located in Kukak Bay, Katmai National Park, Alaska
Located within 4.6 million acres of protected wilderness, Katmai Wilderness Lodge is one of the most secluded bear-viewing destinations in Alaska. The lodge is accessible only by floatplane, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the wild without crowds or distractions. Every stay combines comfort, safety, and adventure in the heart of nature.
Small group adventures
With a maximum of 12 guests and a low 1:6 guide-to-guest ratio, every wildlife excursion is intimate, safe, and tailored to your interests.
Full wildlife guiding service
Guests stay 4–8 days and enjoy daily personalized outings to observe brown bears, coastal wolves, foxes, sea otters, king salmon, and marine birds in their natural habitats.
Immersive bear viewing tours
No bear viewing platforms; instead, you’ll walk the same shores and tidal flats as the bears, always with expert naturalist guides who are familiar with the land and wildlife.
Remote and crowd-free
Far from crowds, our Katmai lodge offers true wilderness access. With no roads, no cell service, and no outside visitors, just escape.
Seasoned, knowledgeable staff
Our guides live and work on-site throughout the season and provide deep insight into local ecology and behavior patterns.
Rates & Booking FAQs
How do I select and book a package?
Choose the package that fits your preferred length of stay and adventure level. All bookings are per person based on double room occupancy. To reserve, contact our friendly staff by phone or email. We’ll guide you through the process.
Are the packages all-inclusive?
Yes! Packages include accommodations, all gourmet meals, beverages, bar service, guided bear-viewing and outdoor activities, round-trip transport from Kodiak, and unique remote lodge experiences.
Can I book a package as a solo traveler or single occupancy?
Yes, all pricing is per person and based on double occupancy. Guests traveling solo or requesting a private room will be subject to a single-occupancy surcharge of 1.5× the per-person rate.
Can I customize or extend my stay?
Is tipping expected?
Yes. Gratuities are appreciated as a way to recognize the efforts of our guides, lodge staff, chef, and hosts. Tips are always earned through service and are never mandatory. For guests who wish to plan ahead, the customary industry range is 10–20% of the total package cost.
Gratuities given to lodge management are distributed evenly among the entire team, as it takes a coordinated group effort to deliver an exceptional experience in this remote setting. Guests are also welcome to tip individuals directly if they would like to personally acknowledge outstanding service.
What is your deposit, cancellation, and refund policy?
How do I get to and from the lodge?
From Anchorage, simply travel to Kodiak, Alaska via Alaska Airlines. After arriving in Kodiak, guests are responsible for arranging their own transportation to their hotel and, the following day, to the floatplane basin for the flight to Katmai Lodge. We provide a detailed welcome sheet with recommended taxi services, addresses, and helpful travel information to make this process easy. Learn more on our Getting There page.
How long is the floatplane flight from Kodiak to the lodge?
Does weather ever delay flights to Katmai Wilderness Lodge?
Weather delays are a realistic consideration when traveling throughout Alaska, so we strongly recommend securing Travel Insurance for your Alaska vacation.
We highly advise spending a night in Kodiak before and after your lodge adventure to avoid tight scheduling difficulties or issues with travel delays to and from the lodge. If you plan to fly from Kodiak to Anchorage the same day as departing the lodge at the end of your stay, we recommend reserving a flight to Anchorage that leaves Kodiak at 4:45 p.m. or later flights.
What can I do while in Kodiak?
Kodiak is a beautiful, small town with a rich history influenced by Native Culture, Russian ERA, World War II, USCG (United States Coast Guard), and is home to a rich fishing industry and Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to friendly locals, the town boasts several wonderful museums, restaurants, and shops – all within convenient walking distance of downtown hotels.
Are there luggage restrictions?
Any additional planes or costs incurred by excess luggage weight are solely the guest’s responsibility. The floatplane carrier’s office offers convenient luggage storage for any additional baggage you won’t need while at Katmai, available for quick pick up upon your return to Kodiak.
